Lately I have been thinking a lot about functions, I wonder why. Obviously thinking of life, career, projects, raising kids, retiring, etc. can all be viewed through a functional lens. Mike Pearsall’s article this month is about customs and holidays. What is the function of his article? To me it is to CELEBRATE FAMILY or CELEBRATE TRADITIONS or EVOKE MEMORIES or ENJOY FAMILY/FRIENDS.
While the rest of the articles in this edition of Value World focus on the function of CONVEY INFORMATION, RECAP EVENTS, and PLAN ACTIVITIES/ACTIONS. This e-journal also needs to move more towards, and I wrote about this a few months back, the functions of IMPART WISDOM, CONVEY KNOWLEDGE, and SPREAD THE VALUE METHODOLOGY.
Our editorial team is currently reviewing articles submitted for future issues of Value World. My interest is that we start targeting one or two articles every month that focus on the state of our Value Methodology (VM) practice and novel means to conduct studies and critical results coming from unique studies.
What can we do as an organization to encourage more articles of this ilk to be submitted to Value World? Our peers are engaged in significant studies and research addressing anything from carbon costing of projects, employment of disruptive technologies in manufacturing and construction, and providing critical reviews of multi-billion-dollar projects. How can we get them and others outside of the Value Engineering world to see this information and hear about the impacts we are making outside of our annual Value Summit?
Seriously, any input would be well received and impactful to the SAVE International Board of Directors and our colleagues that put out Value World. Function is important and spreading the process and outcomes of functional thinking is something that we need to express outside of our own group of Value practitioners, so let’s figure this out together to expand the word. To repeat Renee Hoekstra’s tag line “Spread the word and the word is Value Methodology.” Yes, let’s do that and let’s do that well.
I hope you enjoy this issue and the beauty of the winter holidays.
