Editor’s Voice – November/December 2024

By Anthony Dunams, PE, CVS – Editor, Value World

Writing this from a nice hotel in Philadelphia that I have been stuck in all day due to being sick.  The life of a VE Facilitator is an interesting one and lately it seems that I have been on the road every week for months now.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it, but it can be hard on the body and mind.

Another thing that is hard on the body and mind is the challenges we have in the American Political system and general political challenges across the globe.  A change is coming, and right now I don’t know if it is good or bad but rather just concerning.  Will any of this change our industry? I don’t think so and it may even ramp up infrastructure projects.  Projects need to get built, services and goods need to be provided, but the humanity underlying those activities will be different.

One promising activity addressing humanity and shared learning that I have seen from my fellow practitioners is shared communication and experiences with executing and improving the functional analysis piece of the SAVE International Value Methodology (VM).  Working together to improve the impact of VE/VM studies is sustainable, community-building, and impactful overall to grow clients and successful projects that beget an increasing number of future projects and practitioners.  I appreciate the effort put forth by those individuals to share their thoughts and successes in delivering function analysis and for the dialogues I have been part of this communication was illuminating and perplexing – function analysis is a unique discipline and requires both art and science to get it right.

Everyone be safe out there and be good to your fellow human.  Enjoy the articles in this issue – note deadlines for the Consultant Directory, planning for the 2025 USAV event, and other articles on what is happening in VE across the globe.
